Villarrobledo and La Roda: getting to Madrid and Albacete, Villarrobledo station, the A-31, and the nights of the Carnival and the spring festival
Villarrobledo and La Roda, in Albacete's La Mancha, look two ways at once: to Madrid along the A-31 and A-3, and to Albacete down the same A-31. Villarrobledo has a railway station, but it is a conventional-line station with few trains a day; high speed is caught at Albacete-Los Llanos, 87 km from Villarrobledo and 43 km from La Roda. To reach Madrid, a car with a driver from Villarrobledo covers 202 km in about 152 min, less than going down to Albacete and up by AVE, and reaches Barajas in 217 km. At the February Carnival and the festival in late April and early May, the problem is the group's return before dawn, and it is solved by booking it with the outbound leg, from 117,22 € to Albacete.

Which trains stop at Villarrobledo and La Roda?
Villarrobledo has an Adif station on Calle Juan Ferreira, with ticket sales and an assistance service, on the conventional line linking Alcázar de San Juan with Albacete. Through it run the Media Distancia services connecting Ciudad Real's La Mancha with Albacete and, depending on the season, the occasional long-distance train between Madrid and the Levante or Andalusia that calls at the town. The offer is short and it changes: before relying on a particular train, look the station up on Renfe's website or Adif's departures board, because the town hall's own page points to those two sources and publishes no timetable. La Roda has its station on the same line, with even fewer stops.
What stops at neither is high-speed rail. The AVE line from Madrid to the Levante crosses the province with no intermediate station between Cuenca and Albacete, so anyone wanting a fast train to Madrid, Valencia or Alicante has to start by getting to Albacete-Los Llanos: from Villarrobledo it is 87 km and about 69 min, and from La Roda 43 km and 37 min along the A-31. That sum, the car to Albacete plus the hour and a half of AVE, is what has to be weighed against the direct car to Madrid, and for Villarrobledo the comparison has a clear outcome.
Why is Madrid closer from Villarrobledo than going to catch the AVE?
Villarrobledo sits in the north-western corner of the province, halfway between Albacete and Madrid, and the province page says it plainly: it is closer to Madrid than the capital itself is. By road you head for La Roda to pick up the A-31 northbound and, at Atalaya del Cañavate, the A-3 to Madrid: 202 km to the centre and about 152 min, motorway almost all the way. Going down to Los Llanos first means driving the wrong way for three quarters of an hour and then undoing it by train, so for a single traveller the AVE only pays off when the ticket is very cheap and the destination is next to Atocha or Chamartín.
There is a bus from Villarrobledo to Madrid, but the town hall publishes its reality: a single morning departure, weekdays only, calling at Socuéllamos, Pedro Muñoz, El Toboso, Quintanar de la Orden and Corral de Almaguer before reaching Estación Sur, and therefore more than three hours of travel. For La Roda, already on the A-31, the car to Madrid is 217 km. Tarazona de la Mancha and Madrigueras join the A-31 on local roads without going down to Albacete, so the logic is the same across the Mancha del Júcar: towards Madrid, by road; towards the coast, the AVE from Albacete remains a good option.
And Barajas from Villarrobledo and La Roda?
For flying, most of the province looks to Alicante or Valencia, but Villarrobledo is the exception the province page points out: from here Madrid can pay off. Barajas is reached along the A-31 and A-3 and, on arriving in Madrid, via the M-40 or M-50 northbound without entering the city: 217 km and about 158 min, with a "from" fare of 269,68 € for the car. From La Roda it is 227 km. The four terminals are stated when booking, because T4 is set apart from the rest and the driver drops you at the right departures door.
The public transport alternative is long: car or train to Albacete, AVE to Chamartín or Atocha and from there Cercanías or metro to T4, with three changes and several hours of margin, and only at train times. For early flights, which require being in the terminal before any train has left the province, the car from home is the only way to arrive. On the way back, the flight number lets the driver follow the arrival and wait in the terminal with a name board, so an hour's delay leaves nobody working out how to get back to Villarrobledo at midnight.
How do you get to Villarrobledo's Carnival and music festival?
Villarrobledo has two dates that bring people from all over Spain. The Carnival, a Festival of National Tourist Interest, runs from the Thursday before Ash Wednesday to Piñata Sunday, so it falls between February and March depending on the year and lasts more than a week, with the big comparsa parades, the wedding contest and the Burial of the Sardine as its main days; the town hall publishes the official programme every year. The spring music festival, a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, takes up several days in late April and early May, with several stages, service areas and one of the largest campsites attached to a festival in Spain, and the line-up runs from the afternoon into the small hours.
For anyone coming from outside, the usual way is the AVE to Albacete-Los Llanos and from there a car to Villarrobledo, 86 km along the A-31 and the La Roda road, or the direct car from Madrid when travelling as a group with tents and rucksacks. On festival days the town multiplies its population, the parking by the site fills up and the access streets are regulated, so it pays to agree a recognisable pickup point outside the perimeter when booking. The transfer is booked with the arriving train's number; if the AVE is late, the driver sees it and adjusts the wait at the station door.
How do you get back before dawn and as a group?
Festival night and Carnival nights end when there are no trains or buses left: the first Media Distancia leaves Villarrobledo in daylight and the bus to Albacete has three departures on weekdays and fewer on holidays, none in the small hours. Anyone staying in Albacete, La Roda or Tomelloso who has spent the night on the site should not drive, and at that hour there are no free cars on the street. The return with a driver is booked before setting out, with a rough time adjusted by message when the group decides to leave: Villarrobledo–Albacete is 86 km, about 66 min, from 117,22 € for the car; to La Roda, 46 km.
The price is per car, not per person, so five friends returning from the festival to Albacete split it, and for six or seven with camping gear a larger vehicle is requested when booking. On the big days, the festival Saturday and Carnival's Piñata Sunday, cars across the whole province get booked in advance, and asking days ahead is not a courtesy but the only way to have one. It works the other way too: the group arriving on the afternoon AVE at Los Llanos who want to be on site for the first concerts books the outbound leg with the train number and the return with an approximate time, and both route pages give the "from" fare.
