Flying from Albacete: which airport to choose between Alicante, Valencia, Murcia and Barajas depending on where you set off

Albacete is the Castilla-La Mancha province with most airports nearby, and none of them is its own, because Los Llanos has barely any commercial flights. From the capital, Alicante-Elche is 175 km along the A-31, about 139 min; Valencia-Manises 163 km via the A-35 and A-3; Región de Murcia airport, at Corvera, 171 km along the A-30; and Barajas 265 km, the farthest but the one with intercontinental flights. From Almansa or Caudete, Alicante and Valencia are much closer than the capital; from Hellín, Murcia; from Villarrobledo, Madrid may pay off. The AVE reaches Madrid and Alicante but no terminal, so for pre-dawn flights or with luggage the transfer with a driver, from 226,00 € to Alicante, is what gets you to the door at any hour.

Why does Albacete airport not count?

Albacete airport lies south of the city and shares its runway with the Los Llanos air base, home to the Air Force's fighter pilot school and NATO's TLP programme. It has a civil terminal but minimal commercial activity: a few seasonal or charter flights in particular years and long spells without any scheduled service. Before booking a transfer there, check that the flight exists that day, because the province page says it plainly: for most destinations you fly from Alicante, Valencia or Madrid.

That absence explains the province's air geography: Albacete is a crossroads of motorways (A-31 to Alicante, A-35 to Valencia, A-30 to Murcia, A-3 to Madrid) and each leads to a different airport. The question people in Albacete ask is not "how do I get to the airport" but "which one", and the answer depends on where they start as much as on the flight's destination.

Alicante-Elche: the reference airport?

For the capital and the Almansa corridor, yes. Alicante-Elche airport, at El Altet, is Spain's fifth busiest and the one with most European destinations of the four; you get there on the A-31 through Almansa, Villena and Elda and leave it before entering Alicante, without crossing the city. From Albacete it is 175 km and about 139 min; from Almansa, 104 km, far less than Almansa to Barajas; from Hellín, 150 km.

There is a direct AVE from Albacete to Alicante, around an hour and a quarter to Alicante-Terminal station, but the station is in the city and the airport about ten kilometres away, linked by the C-6 bus; in total, with waits, the train adds up to more than the direct car and only works at AVE times. The stretch of the A-31 that varies most is the junction with the A-7 near Elche on summer afternoons, when the coast fills up; the rest is clear motorway across the Villena plateau.

Valencia-Manises: when is it the best option?

For the Almansa and Caudete corridor, for La Manchuela (Casas-Ibáñez, Alcalá del Júcar) and for anyone flying to destinations Alicante does not cover. Valencia airport is at Manises, west of the city and beside the A-3, so from Albacete you take the A-31 to Almansa, the A-35 to Xàtiva and the A-7 to the A-3 without entering Valencia: 163 km and about 123 min. From Almansa it is 126 km, and from La Manchuela you go straight up to the A-3 without passing through Albacete.

Manises also has the advantage of the metro: Metrovalencia lines 3 and 5 reach the terminal from Joaquín Sorolla station, so anyone arriving in Valencia by AVE from Albacete (about fifty minutes) can connect by public transport. It is the only one of the four train-plus-metro combinations that works reasonably, provided the flight leaves mid-morning or in the afternoon; for seven o'clock flights, the direct car from home is still the only way.

Región de Murcia and Barajas: the two extremes?

Región de Murcia International Airport, at Corvera, is south of Murcia city along the A-30, and it is the natural airport for Hellín, Tobarra and the Sierra del Segura: from Hellín it is 110 km and about 80 min, and from Albacete 171 km. It has fewer destinations than Alicante and a very seasonal offer, mainly to the UK and Ireland, so it pays off when the flight exists and you leave from the south of the province.

Barajas is the other extreme: the farthest from almost the whole province, 265 km from Albacete via the A-31 and A-3 and about 179 min, round Madrid on the M-40 or M-50 without entering the city; but it is the one with intercontinental flights and many connections that do not leave from the coast. From Villarrobledo, in the north-west, Madrid is closer than the capital and Barajas is done in 217 km. The Albacete–Madrid AVE takes about an hour and a half to Atocha, and from Atocha to T4 you add Cercanías via Chamartín: from home, close to three hours and only at train times.

How do you choose and when does the transfer with a driver pay off?

The province page's rule: before choosing an airport, think about where you are leaving from, and pick the flight with the road trip in mind, not just the ticket price. A ticket twenty euros cheaper at Barajas is swallowed many times over on the drive from Almansa, where Alicante is under an hour away. And a rule of the transfer itself: the price is per car, not per person, so for a family of four flying on holiday the split usually comes out below the AVE tickets plus connection, and avoids hauling suitcases through two or three changes.

For early flights, of which the coast has many, the count runs backwards from boarding: two hours in the terminal for a European flight, the engine's time and a margin for the Elche approach or the A-3 in summer. A seven o'clock flight at Alicante means leaving Albacete at half past three in the morning, when there is no train; that is the hour at which the transfer makes sense. When booking, the flight number and terminal let the driver work out the pickup and track the flight on the way back. At Easter, in July and at Christmas, when the whole province flies at once, it pays to book as soon as you have the ticket.
