Albacete Fair, 7 to 17 September: how to reach the fairground, where cars pick up and how to get back to the villages in the small hours
The Albacete Fair, from 7 to 17 September, is of international tourist interest and fills the city for ten days in a row with people from across the province. The fairground is in the west of the city at the end of Paseo de la Feria, and during those days the streets around it close to traffic: nobody can be dropped or picked up at the gate, only at the designated points on the surrounding avenues. By day you get there by train and bus, but returns to the villages bunch up in the small hours, when there is nothing left: from the fairground to Hellín it is 64 km, to Almansa 74 km, to Villarrobledo 85 km and to La Roda 41 km. The return with a driver is booked before leaving, with the pickup point agreed; from La Roda, from 61,51 €.

What is the Fair and what is "the frying pan"?
The Albacete Fair has been held in honour of the Virgen de los Llanos since the eighteenth century and has fixed dates: 7 to 17 September, with the opening parade on the evening of the 7th and fireworks on the 17th. It has been of international tourist interest since 2008 and, by visitor numbers and days, is the biggest festival in Castilla-La Mancha. The centre of everything is the fairground, an eighteenth-century building remodelled many times, with two concentric rings of stalls, marquees and bars, a funfair field and an entrance promenade: seen from above it is shaped like a frying pan, and that is what everyone calls it.
Outside the fair the venue hosts other events and is easy to reach; during those ten days it is not. The city council closes Paseo de la Feria, the surroundings of the fairground and part of the nearby avenues to traffic, reorganises the city buses with shuttles and sets up park-and-ride car parks on the outskirts. Each year's rules and the map of closures are published on the council website a few days beforehand and are worth checking, because the exact points change.
How do you get there from the province during the day?
By train, Albacete-Los Llanos station is about twenty minutes on foot from the fairground, across the centre along Calle Ancha and Paseo de la Libertad, or on the shuttle city buses the council reinforces for the fair. During those days Renfe usually adds Media Distancia services from Villarrobledo, La Roda, Almansa and Hellín, and the AVE trains bring visitors from Madrid, Valencia and Alicante; it is the most comfortable way to arrive at midday or in the afternoon. By bus, the intercity lines from the whole province end at the bus station, next to the railway station.
By car, the A-31 from Almansa and La Roda, the A-30 from Hellín and the N-310 from Villarrobledo enter Albacete on the ring road, and the sensible thing is not to try to reach the fairground: the park-and-ride car parks on the outskirts with shuttles are the council's proposal, and even so they fill up on the big days (weekends and the night of the 7th). Anyone going with a driver skips all that: they are dropped at the designated pickup point nearest the entrance they use, a few minutes' walk from the fairground.
Where do cars drop off and pick up during the Fair?
Not at the gate. The perimeter closed to traffic covers Paseo de la Feria and the streets around the fairground, and inside only authorised services circulate. Taxi ranks and pickup points move to the avenues bordering the perimeter, in places the council signposts each year and which change with the works or arrangements of the moment. That is why the province page advises the same as this guide: if you book during the Fair, give an address outside the fairground area or ask about the pickup point.
What works well is agreeing a fixed, recognisable point a few minutes' walk from the fairground, the same for both ways: an avenue corner, a hotel, the door of a public building. The driver confirms the point on booking and, if that year's closure map puts it inside the perimeter, suggests another. At three or four in the morning, when thousands of people leave at once, a point agreed in advance is the difference between leaving straight away and hunting for the car for an hour.
How do you get back to the villages in the small hours?
This is the real problem of the Fair for anyone living outside Albacete. The night at the fairground ends late, between three and six in the morning depending on the day, and at those hours there are no trains or intercity buses: the first Media Distancia to Villarrobledo or the first bus to Hellín leaves in daylight, and the station and the fairground surroundings fill with people waiting. The distances are not great, but nobody who has spent the night at the Fair should drive them: Hellín 64 km and about 50 min; Almansa 74 km and 55 min; Villarrobledo 85 km and 63 min; La Roda 41 km and 31 min; Caudete 103 km.
The return with a driver is booked before leaving home, with an approximate time and the agreed pickup point; the time is adjusted by message when the group decides to leave, and the price, per car and not per person, is fixed on booking. For four or five friends from La Roda, the split comes to little more than the night at the fairground costs, and nobody drives. On the Fair's big days — the 7th, the weekends and the night of the 17th — cars run out across the province, so booking days ahead is not a courtesy tip, it is the only way to have a car.
And the province's other big festivals?
Albacete has a festival calendar with the same transport problem on another scale. Hellín's Tamborada, at Easter and also of international tourist interest, fills the town with drums day and night, closes the centre to traffic and sends visitors back to Albacete or Murcia at odd hours: Hellín–Albacete is 65 km. Almansa's Moors and Christians, in early May, fill the town for several days; Caudete holds its own in early September, almost at the same time as the capital's Fair, and Villarrobledo has its carnival and its summer music festivals.
The same rule applies to all of them: the centre closes, the return is at night and public transport does not cover it. Each town has its area page with routes to the rest of the province and the "from" fare, and booking works as it does for the Fair: pickup point outside the closure, approximate time and adjustment by message. What the Fair teaches in September serves the rest of the year.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Albacete Fair?
From 7 to 17 September every year, with the opening parade on the evening of the 7th and fireworks on the 17th. It has been of international tourist interest since 2008.
Can you drive to the fairground gate?
No. During the Fair, Paseo de la Feria and the fairground surroundings are closed to traffic; drop-offs and pickups use the designated points on the surrounding avenues, which the council signposts each year.
How much is it back from the Fair to Hellín in the small hours?
The published "from" fare for the route is 91,05 €, per car, for 64 km and about 50 min. The calculator gives the exact price with the date and time.
