Alcalá del Júcar and the source of the river Mundo without your own car: how to get there, where to park and why the return is booked with the outbound trip

Alcalá del Júcar looks over the river gorge with houses and caves carved into the rock below its castle, 53 km from Albacete; the source of the river Mundo, Los Chorros, cascades out of a cave in the Calar del Mundo near Riópar, 126 km from the capital along Sierra de Alcaraz roads. No regular bus line reaches either in a way that allows a day visit, in Alcalá parking fills up early in season and at the river Mundo the viewpoint is reached on foot. The province page says it: agree the return time when booking, because there are no taxis or buses there to sort it out on the spot. From Albacete to Alcalá del Júcar, from 82,33 €.

What does Alcalá del Júcar have and why can you not park?

Alcalá del Júcar is the most photographed village in the province: it hangs from the slope of the Júcar gorge, in La Manchuela, with the Almohad castle at the top, the church halfway up, the Roman bridge at the bottom and, in between, cave houses that run right through the rock, some turned into bars and museums. It is a listed historic site and one of Spain's prettiest villages by several rankings, and in spring, summer and on long weekends it gets far more visitors than its streets can hold.

The streets are narrow and steep, largely pedestrian or one-way, and parking is concentrated around the bridge and on the access road, where it fills from mid-morning in season; the council regulates access to the old village on the busiest days. A transfer that drops you by the bridge saves hunting for a space and the climb up from the far car parks, and a pickup at the same point at the agreed time avoids the afternoon exit queue. From Albacete it is 53 km; from Almansa, 70 km; from Hellín, 113 km.

Is there a bus to Alcalá del Júcar?

There is an intercity line or two linking Albacete with La Manchuela (Casas-Ibáñez, Alcalá del Júcar) on weekdays, with one or two departures designed for residents going to the capital in the morning and returning in the afternoon: exactly the opposite of what a visitor needs, who wants to arrive in the morning and leave at dusk. At weekends and on holidays, when most people go, the service is minimal or non-existent. The province page is clear: La Manchuela's villages are small, far from the capital and public transport to Albacete is scarce.

For anyone arriving in Albacete by AVE from Madrid or Valencia, the combination that works is train to Los Llanos and transfer from the station to the Alcalá bridge, with the return booked for the train home. Alcalá del Júcar can be seen in one long day — castle, caves, a walk along the riverbank, lunch in one of the cave houses — and chains well with Jorquera or Casas-Ibáñez if you book a service with stops.

How do you reach the source of the river Mundo?

Los Chorros del río Mundo lie in the Calares del Mundo y de la Sima Natural Park, next to Riópar in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in the south-west of the province: the water emerges from the Cueva de los Chorros, an opening in the limestone wall of the Calar del Mundo, and falls in a cascade of around eighty metres which, in rainy or thaw periods, produces the "reventón", a spectacular surge that draws thousands of people. From Albacete it is 126 km and about 111 min, the last part on the sierra's mountain roads; from Hellín, 82 km.

Access to the site is regulated by the regional government: there is a paid car park at the bottom, by the road, with a limited capacity that fills at spring and autumn weekends and on "reventón" days, and from it you walk up a path to the waterfall viewpoint, between half an hour and forty-five minutes depending on pace. There is no public transport to the car park: the bus, when it runs, stops in Riópar. Going with a driver has two advantages here: getting in and out of the capacity limit without the private cars' wait, and not driving back on mountain roads at dusk, which the province page advises doing in daylight.

When to go and what is around?

For the river Mundo, spring and autumn are the best times: there is water, the heat is not fierce and, with luck, you see the "reventón", announced with a few days' notice on the park's and Riópar council's social media and filling the car park from first thing. In summer the flow drops but the sierra is a refuge from the heat of the plain, and Riópar, Las Fábricas de Riópar (with the museum of the old brass works) and the villages of the Sierra de Alcaraz — Alcaraz, Vianos, Ayna, Yeste — round off a one- or two-day trip.

For Alcalá del Júcar, the province page marks the season: from June to September and on long weekends it gets far more visitors than the rest of the year, and the car parks fill early. Outside those days the village is almost empty to enjoy. The two visits do not combine well in one day from Albacete, because they lie at opposite ends of the province; each is an outing in itself, with the return booked at the same time as the outbound trip.

How do you book the trip there and back?

As two services or as one with waiting time, whichever suits. For Alcalá del Júcar the usual is a morning outbound trip with pickup by the bridge at an agreed time in the afternoon; for the river Mundo, outbound to the Los Chorros car park with pickup two or three hours later, which is what it takes to climb, see the waterfall and come down at an easy pace. The price is per car and per leg, not per person, and is fixed on booking: Albacete to Alcalá del Júcar from 82,33 €, Albacete to the source of the river Mundo from 166,89 €; the calculator gives the exact price with the date and time.

What does not work is arriving and then looking for a way back: neither Alcalá del Júcar nor Riópar has staffed taxi ranks, and the last bus, where there is one, leaves mid-afternoon. For groups of friends or families arriving in Albacete by AVE, the driver can collect at Los Llanos and do the full day with the agreed stops; each destination's route page has the "from" fare per leg.
