Albacete General University Hospital: getting to your appointment from Hellín, Almansa, Villarrobledo, La Roda or Caudete, and what each area hospital covers

Albacete province has four SESCAM public hospitals: Albacete General University Hospital, the reference for the whole province and with specialities found nowhere else in it, and the area hospitals of Hellín, Almansa and Villarrobledo. Referrals end up in Albacete: 60 km from Hellín on the A-30, 71 km from Almansa on the A-31, 85 km from Villarrobledo, 41 km from La Roda and 101 km from Caudete. The morning bus arrives after the nine o'clock appointment has passed, and appointments and tests can take up much of the day. The transfer to the appointment is a car with a driver there and back, not medical transport: you book with the appointment time and the return with a margin; from La Roda, from 61,92 €.

Which hospital is yours depending on where you live?

The Castilla-La Mancha Health Service divides the province into four areas. Albacete General University Hospital, together with the University Hospital Complex including Perpetuo Socorro and Nuestra Señora del Rosario, serves the capital, the Llanos, the Mancha del Júcar (La Roda, Tarazona, Madrigueras), La Manchuela (Casas-Ibáñez, Alcalá del Júcar) and the Sierra de Alcaraz. Hellín Hospital covers Hellín, Tobarra and part of the Sierra del Segura; Almansa General Hospital, Almansa, Caudete and the eastern corridor; and Villarrobledo General Hospital, the town and the north-western villages.

The three area hospitals have emergencies, inpatient care and the basic specialities, but the province page sums it up well: many specialities are only at Albacete General Hospital. Radiation oncology, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, haemodynamics, the regional reference units: the patient from Hellín, Almansa or Villarrobledo ends up in the capital, and for some things in hospitals in Madrid or Valencia. The hospital sets the appointment; the patient organises the trip.

How do you reach Albacete General Hospital and why is the bus no use first thing?

The General University Hospital is in the north of the city, on Calle Hermanos Falcó, with paid parking and several city bus lines. From the province the problem is the hour: specialist appointments start at half past eight, and the intercity buses from Hellín, Almansa, Villarrobledo or La Roda reach the bus station, in the south of the city next to the railway station, mid-morning; from there to the hospital you cross Albacete by city bus or taxi. For a nine o'clock appointment, the bus means sleeping in the capital.

Distances from the main towns: Hellín 60 km and about 48 min on the A-30; Almansa 71 km and 53 min on the A-31; Villarrobledo 85 km and 64 min; La Roda 41 km and 31 min; Caudete 101 km and 71 min. They are clear motorways: going to the appointment and back in the same morning is reasonable from any of them, and from the Sierra del Segura or the Sierra de Alcaraz, on mountain roads, the trip is long but still a day's.

What is a transfer to an appointment and what is it not?

It is a car with a driver that picks you up at home, drops you at the hospital entrance and comes back when the appointment ends. It is not medical transport: no stretcher, no medical staff, not prescribed by the doctor or paid by SESCAM, and no substitute for the scheduled ambulance that patients whose condition requires it are entitled to. It is the option for someone who can travel sitting in an ordinary car and does not want to, or cannot, drive, depend on a relative taking the day off, or wait for a bus that does not fit the appointment.

It works the same for companions and visitors: the person taking their mother to the appointment who does not want to leave her alone at the door while parking, or the relative coming from Valencia by AVE for a ward visit with no car in Albacete. The price is per car and trip, not per person, and is fixed on booking; each route has its page with the "from" fare and the calculator gives the exact price with the address and time.

How do you book the return if the appointment runs long?

The province page warns: specialist appointments and tests can take up much of the day. Blood tests with a wait for results, imaging that gets delayed, one appointment leading to another in the same hospital. What works is booking the return with an approximate time and a margin, and letting us know as soon as the real time is clear: the driver adjusts the pickup at the hospital entrance, a fixed point that is easy to find. For regular treatments — dialysis, chemotherapy, rehabilitation — the same trip repeats for weeks, and through the company's panel a recurring service can be agreed with a fixed price per trip for the whole cycle.

A useful detail when booking: the Albacete Hospital Complex has several buildings and entrances (outpatients, emergencies, day hospital, Perpetuo Socorro on another street), and the difference between one and another is several minutes on foot that cost a patient. Naming the entrance, if the appointment letter says, keeps the car from dropping you at the wrong door.

And referrals to Madrid, Valencia or Murcia?

For what is not treated in Albacete, SESCAM refers patients to national reference hospitals, almost always in Madrid, and in some cases to Valencia or Murcia by proximity and agreement. Albacete has an advantage here over the rest of the region: the AVE reaches Madrid in an hour and a half and Valencia in under an hour, and for a patient who can move by metro it is a good option. For anyone who cannot, or travels with a companion and luggage, the direct car to the hospital door is what avoids changes: Albacete to Madrid is 256 km, to Valencia 170 km and to Murcia 145 km.

From the south of the province, Murcia is the nearest big city and many people in Hellín and Tobarra have a private doctor or family there: Hellín–Murcia is 84 km on the A-30. The page on Madrid's hospitals from the province has the "from" fares to each centre, and the province's four hospitals are in the route engine from every town: the price is checked the same way for an appointment in Hellín as for one in Albacete.

Frequently asked questions

Is the transfer to the hospital medical transport?

No. It is a car with a driver to and from the appointment, with no stretcher or medical staff; it is not prescribed by the doctor or paid by SESCAM. Scheduled ambulances are requested at the health centre.

How much is Hellín to Albacete General Hospital?

The published "from" fare is 86,45 € for 60 km and about 48 min on the A-30. The calculator gives the exact price with the address, date and time.

Is there a bus from Almansa to Albacete hospital?

There is a bus to Albacete bus station on weekday timetables, arriving mid-morning; then you still cross the city to the hospital, in the north. For a nine o'clock appointment it does not arrive in time.

Can the driver wait while the appointment lasts?

The usual thing is to book there and back as two services, with the return at an approximate time adjusted once the real one is known. The calculator gives the price of each leg; the return is collected at the hospital entrance.

Do you also cover Hellín, Almansa and Villarrobledo hospitals?

Yes. All four hospitals in the province are in the route engine from every town, with their "from" fare on each route page; for instance, Caudete to Almansa Hospital from 49,96 €.
