Albacete-Los Llanos station: which trains stop, how long they take to Madrid, Alicante and Valencia, and how to get there from Hellín, Almansa, Villarrobledo and La Roda
High-speed rail in Albacete province stops only in the capital: Albacete-Los Llanos station is on the Madrid–Levante line, with AVE and Avant to Madrid in around an hour and a half, to Alicante in just over an hour and to Valencia in under an hour, plus conventional trains towards Alcázar de San Juan and Cartagena. From the rest of the province, catching the first morning train depends on a car, because village buses do not leave that early: from Hellín it is 64 km along the A-30, from Almansa 73 km along the A-31, from Villarrobledo 87 km and from La Roda 43 km. The transfer is booked with the train number or time and the driver works out the pickup to reach the access check in good time; from La Roda, from 65,05 €.

Which trains stop at Albacete-Los Llanos?
Albacete-Los Llanos station, in the south of the city beside Avenida de la Estación, was rebuilt for the arrival of the Madrid–Levante high-speed line in 2010 and is today one of the best-served stations in Castilla-La Mancha. Stopping services include the AVE and Avant trains between Madrid and Alicante, the Madrid–Murcia AVE via Albacete, trains of the operators that have entered the Levante corridor, and the Media Distancia and regional trains to Alcázar de San Juan, Valencia, Cartagena and Murcia on the conventional line. It is the station for the whole province, and early in the day travellers arrive from Hellín, Almansa or La Roda with no bus connection at that hour.
The times that matter: to Madrid Puerta de Atocha or Chamartín, around an hour and a half; to Alicante, just over an hour; to Valencia, under an hour on direct services; to Cuenca, about half an hour. That is what lets many people from Albacete work or study in Madrid or Valencia and sleep at home, and what makes the station the province's departure point for almost any destination. Timetables change by season and are at renfe.com and on the other operators' sites.
Why does the bus not make the first train?
Because intercity bus timetables are built for the working day, not for the trains. The lines from Hellín, Almansa, Villarrobledo, La Roda or Caudete reach Albacete bus station, which is next to the railway station, but the first morning departure arrives after the half past six and half past seven AVE trains to Madrid have left, and the last return leaves before the night trains arrive. For the Monday first-thing work trip, or the Sunday evening return, the bus leaves the traveller stranded.
La Roda and Villarrobledo have conventional stations on the Alcázar–Albacete line, with Media Distancia trains that connect at Albacete with the AVE, but infrequent and with timetables that do not always match the fast train; Almansa and Caudete are on the conventional line to Valencia and Alicante, with the same problem. For Hellín and Tobarra, on the Cartagena line, regional trains are scarce. The result is the same as in every province of the region: at six in the morning, the station forecourt fills with cars from the villages.
How far is it from each town and what does the connection cost?
The engine's figures from the main towns: Hellín 64 km and about 50 min on the A-30, "from" fare 91,25 €; Almansa 73 km and 57 min on the A-31, from 102,53 €; Villarrobledo 87 km and 69 min, from 119,07 €; La Roda 43 km and 37 min; Caudete 103 km and 75 min. They are clear motorways at almost any hour; the only stretch with traffic is the entry into Albacete on the ring road at rush hour.
The price is per car and trip, not per person, and is fixed on booking. For a day return from Hellín to Madrid, the transfer to the station plus the AVE usually works out better than driving to Madrid, and much better than parking several days by the station. The province page sums it up: if you connect with the AVE at Albacete from Hellín or Almansa, give the train number or time, and the pickup is worked out to reach Los Llanos in good time.
Park at Los Llanos or go with a driver?
The station has paid parking run by Adif or its concessionaire, with hourly and daily rates, and for a one-day trip from the capital it is a reasonable option. For a week away it stops being one: the accumulated parking cost comes close to the return transfer, and coming back at night with suitcases to a dark car park appeals to nobody. From the towns the usual applies: leaving the family car in Albacete leaves whoever stays in Hellín or Almansa without one.
The transfer is paid per trip, not per day. On the return you book with the train number: if it runs late, the driver sees it on the board and adjusts the pickup at the station door, so nobody is left on the Los Llanos forecourt at midnight working out how to get back to Villarrobledo. During the September Fair, when the station receives thousands of visitors and the streets around the fairground are closed to traffic, the pickup point is agreed on booking; the Fair guide covers it in detail.
And for the coast, the AVE or a direct car?
For Alicante and Valencia city, the AVE from Albacete almost always wins for a lone traveller: just over an hour to Alicante-Terminal and under an hour to Valencia Joaquín Sorolla, with the city right there. For the beach, with luggage, as a group or to a destination that is not the city (Benidorm, Torrevieja, Gandía), the car with a driver takes you to the door with no changes: Albacete to Alicante is 168 km and to Valencia 170 km. The guide to the province's airports covers the same choice for flights.
A frequent case that mixes the two: the family living in Almansa that takes the AVE at Albacete for Madrid and comes back on Sunday night. The outbound Almansa–Los Llanos transfer is booked with the departing train's time, and the return with the arriving train's number; both legs have their route page with the "from" fare and the calculator gives the exact price per service. What does not pay is arriving at Los Llanos on the last AVE and only then looking for a way back to Almansa: at that hour, without a booking, there is nothing.
