Albacete's area hospitals: what Hellín, Almansa and Villarrobledo treat, how to get there from Tobarra, Caudete or La Roda, and what happens when you are referred to the capital

Albacete province has three SESCAM area hospitals besides the complex in the capital: Hellín Hospital, for the Campos de Hellín and the Sierra del Segura; Almansa General Hospital, for the Almansa corridor and Caudete; and Villarrobledo General Hospital, for the north-western Mancha. All three have emergencies, outpatient clinics in the most common specialities and basic tests; what they do not do is referred to Albacete General University Hospital or to Perpetuo Socorro. From Tobarra to Hellín Hospital it is 14 km; from Caudete to Almansa's, 32 km; from La Roda to Villarrobledo's, 45 km. The transfer to the appointment is a car with a driver and a fixed price, with the return booked at the same time; from Tobarra, from 26,30 €.

Which towns does each area hospital serve?

Hellín Hospital stands on the way out of town towards the A-30 and receives residents of Hellín, Tobarra, Ontur, Albatana and Fuente-Álamo, plus part of the Sierra del Segura: Elche de la Sierra, Yeste, Letur and Socovos have their reference hospital there, even though the drive along the CM-412 and CM-3203 is the longest in the province to reach an appointment. Almansa General Hospital, at the eastern tip, serves Almansa, Caudete, Alpera, Bonete, Montealegre del Castillo and Higueruela, towns that by road look as much to Albacete as to Villena and Valencia. Villarrobledo General Hospital covers the town and the north-western district, with Ossa de Montiel, El Bonillo, Munera and Minaya.

SESCAM makes the assignment by basic health zone, and the health card is linked to the corresponding health centre; on the borders between areas there are villages that historically went to one hospital and now belong to another, so what counts is what the appointment letter says. Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón, for instance, belongs to the capital's area even though it is halfway to Almansa, and Tarazona de la Mancha and Madrigueras go to Albacete rather than Villarrobledo. If an appointment comes from a hospital you were not expecting, it is not a mistake: it is the organisation by areas and specialities.

Which appointments and tests are done at the area hospital, and which are not?

The three area hospitals are mid-sized general hospitals with round-the-clock emergencies, inpatient beds, operating theatres and outpatient clinics in the specialities most in demand: internal medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology, urology, gastroenterology, basic cardiology and mental health, with variations between centres. For tests, they do blood work, conventional radiology, ultrasound, mammography, endoscopies and, depending on the hospital, CT scans. For most patients from Hellín, Almansa or Villarrobledo, the follow-up of a chronic illness, a routine scheduled operation or childbirth is dealt with without leaving the district.

What the area hospitals do not have is whatever needs more volume or more technology: MRI in some centres, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, haemodynamics, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, complex medical oncology, stroke units and the second-opinion clinics of specialities that only have staff in Albacete. That is where referral begins: the area hospital's doctor requests the appointment in the capital and the patient receives the letter or message with the day, the time and the building, which may be the General University Hospital on Calle Hermanos Falcó or Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in the city centre, where the complex concentrates part of its outpatient clinics, rehabilitation and some units.

How do you organise the referral to Albacete from each district?

A referral turns a neighbourhood appointment into a journey. From Hellín to Albacete General Hospital it is 60 km and about 48 min on the A-30; from Tobarra, a little less; from Almansa, 71 km on the A-31; from Villarrobledo, 85 km and about 64 min. Casas-Ibáñez and La Manchuela already depend on the capital for everything and make the same trip on local roads. These are motorways or good roads, and a there-and-back trip in a day is the norm; what changes compared with the appointment at the area hospital is that you can no longer walk there or ask a neighbour to drop you off in a few minutes.

There is one detail worth checking on the appointment letter: the building. The General University Hospital and Perpetuo Socorro are in different parts of Albacete, and a morning with a test in one and the consultation in the other means crossing the city between the two. When booking the transfer you give each stop with its time, and the driver makes the link between buildings as part of the same service. For anyone coming from Villarrobledo or Almansa on a Media Distancia train, Albacete-Los Llanos station is in the south and the General Hospital in the north: that last leg, within the city, is urban and is covered by Albacete's taxis, not by the intercity car.

How does the there-and-back with waiting work, and what about the companion?

For an appointment at the area hospital itself from a nearby village, the trip is short and the usual thing is to book the outbound and return as two services with an approximate time for the second; the driver adjusts when the patient says they have finished. For a referral to Albacete from Hellín, Almansa or Villarrobledo, with an hour or two between arrival and departure, a single service with the driver waiting usually pays off: the price is worked out by the car and by the time, is fixed before booking and stops the return from depending on finding a free car in the capital at leaving time. The calculator gives both options for the same address and time.

The companion travels in the same car at no extra cost, because the price is per vehicle and not per person, and can stay with the patient or use the wait for other errands in the city. For anyone in a wheelchair or unable to get into an ordinary car, there is an adapted vehicle with a ramp or lift that is requested when booking and confirmed before the price is fixed, because there are few such cars and it is best to give several days' notice. And if what repeats is a treatment — dialysis three times a week in Albacete, daily rehabilitation in Hellín, chemotherapy in cycles — the same trip can be set up as a fixed service at the same time and the same price for the whole period.

When is it not a transfer but a matter for an ambulance?

A car with a driver is for someone who can travel seated and get in and out of the vehicle on their own or with the companion's help and, in the adapted one, in their chair. It carries no stretcher, oxygen or medical staff, and cannot attend to anyone en route. If the patient needs to lie down, travels with drips or monitoring, has just been discharged after a procedure that prevents sitting, or the doctor has indicated medical transport because of their condition, what applies is the scheduled ambulance that SESCAM itself prescribes and that is requested through the health centre or the hospital's admissions service. It is a patient's right and it costs nothing.

In an emergency, the answer is 112, not a booking: the car is not an emergency vehicle and cannot skip traffic or reach a patient in crisis. Where the transfer with a driver makes sense is in the middle ground, the most common one: the patient who walks but should not drive after a sedated test, the elderly person living alone in Caudete or Tobarra who does not want to trouble the children, the family without a second car, the person leaving the day hospital mid-afternoon with no bus back to their village. For those cases it works the same for the area hospital as for the capital: Chinchilla to Almansa Hospital costs from 83,12 €, and any other town–hospital pair has its "from" fare on its route page.

Frequently asked questions

Which hospital does my village belong to?

The one your health centre and your appointment letter say: SESCAM assigns by basic health zone. Broadly, Hellín serves the south and the Sierra del Segura; Almansa, the eastern corridor with Caudete; Villarrobledo, the north-west; and the Albacete complex, the rest of the province and all referrals.

How much is Caudete to Almansa General Hospital?

The published "from" fare is 49,96 € for 32 km and about 26 min. The calculator gives the exact price with the pickup address, date and time.

Can the driver wait during the appointment in Albacete and bring me back?

Yes. It is booked as a single service with waiting, with the price worked out by the car and the time and fixed before confirming, or as separate outbound and return with an approximate time for the return. The calculator shows both options.

Is there a wheelchair-accessible vehicle?

Yes, with a ramp or lift, and the passenger travels in their own chair. It is requested when booking and confirmed before the price is fixed; there are few such vehicles, so give several days' notice. The accessible service page explains it.

What if I have been discharged and cannot travel seated?

Then it is not a transfer with a driver: ask admissions or your health centre for the scheduled ambulance that SESCAM prescribes. The car is only for someone who can travel seated with no medical care en route.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.

Each hospital's range of services, the assignment by zones and the referrals belong to SESCAM and change; the appointment, the building and, where applicable, the ambulance are decided by the health service. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; the exact price comes from the calculator with date and time.
