From Albacete to Madrid: the AVE from Los Llanos or a car with a driver to Atocha, Chamartín, Estación Sur and IFEMA
For one person going to central Madrid at train times, the AVE from Albacete-Los Llanos wins: around an hour and a half to Chamartín-Clara Campoamor or Puerta de Atocha, depending on the service. The car with a driver pays off when the destination is not a station or the hour is not a train hour: IFEMA is 259 km along the A-31, A-3 and M-40, about 175 min, and the car goes right up to the gate; Estación Sur, at Méndez Álvaro, is 253 km; Atocha, to connect with another train carrying luggage, 253 km. The price is per car, from 304,23 € to the centre, so for three or four people, to leave before dawn or to come back after the last AVE, it is the option that leaves nobody stranded.

Which Madrid station does the Albacete AVE arrive at, and what does that change?
High-speed trains between Albacete and Madrid now use two terminals. A good share of the Levante line services enter Madrid at Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, in the north of the city, and others still arrive at Puerta de Atocha, in the south; the arrivals board at Los Llanos shows both, and the ticket says which one applies. It is not a minor detail: Chamartín is well placed for the business district along the Paseo de la Castellana, for Nuevos Ministerios and for Barajas T4, while Atocha is a step from the historic centre, from Méndez Álvaro and from connections to Andalusia and the south. Anyone who buys by price without checking the terminal can end up at the opposite end of Madrid from their appointment.
Between the two terminals there is a rail tunnel and Cercanías, so the mistake can be corrected, but it costs time with suitcases and stairs. That is why the first question before choosing between train and car is where the journey really ends. If it is an office next to the arrival station, the AVE is unbeatable. If it is an exhibition centre, a hospital, a bus station or a hotel at the far end, you have to add the metro or a city taxi to the ticket, the time of the two connections and a safety margin, and then the direct car from home, with the arrival time fixed when booking, starts to pay off.
How do you drive from Albacete to Madrid, and how long does it take?
The way is a single one and motorway from start to finish: the A-31 north through La Roda to the junction with the A-3 at Atalaya del Cañavate, already in Cuenca province, and the A-3 to Madrid past Motilla, Honrubia and Tarancón. To the centre it is 256 km and about 176 min in daytime with no incidents; the A-3 enters through Vallecas and Conde de Casal, which at commuting hours is the stretch that varies most. For Atocha, very close to that entrance, the car covers 253 km; for Chamartín, in the north, you have to cross or skirt the city and it is 260 km.
For destinations in the east and north of Madrid there is no need to enter the city. IFEMA, the airport and the Campo de las Naciones hotels are reached from the A-3 via the M-40 northbound, and from Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón or any village on the Llanos you join the A-31 without going down to the capital. The driver knows these approaches, and the expected arrival time is worked out when booking with the exact address, not a district name. It also helps to say why you are travelling when it sets the hour: a trade fair that opens at nine, a coach leaving Estación Sur, a train to catch at Atocha.
Why are IFEMA and conferences the clear case for the car?
The IFEMA grounds are on Avenida del Partenón, beside the M-40 and a step from Barajas, far from both AVE stations. From Chamartín or Atocha you get there by metro with a change to line 8 as far as Feria de Madrid, whose exit faces the south entrance; it is doable, but with samples, folders, a folding display or a three-day fair suitcase, the trip becomes long and repeats every morning. The car from Albacete drops you at the taxi and VTC stop at the north entrance, 259 km from home and about 175 min, and on the way back collects you at the same spot at the agreed time.
Madrid's conferences and fairs are booked months ahead, and Albacete companies sending two or three people usually do the full sum: three return AVE tickets, plus the metro rides, plus everyone's time, against one car per leg with a price fixed before booking and an invoice in the company's name. With three travellers and material the car usually comes out ahead, and it lets you work or rehearse the presentation during the two and a half hours of motorway. The corporate account, explained on the companies page, lets the admin person do the booking so the visitor only has to come down to the door on time.
When does the hour decide: early starts, late returns and Estación Sur?
The AVE has a timetable and life does not always. An eight o'clock appointment in Madrid forces you onto the first trains of the morning and leaves the last stretch to be solved from the station; a pre-dawn flight from Barajas, a wedding that ends at four or a meeting that runs past the last evening train leave the traveller in Madrid with no way of getting home to Albacete to sleep. The car with a driver is booked for whatever hour is needed, four in the morning included, and if the plan changes the time is adjusted by message. For Barajas directly from home it is 265 km; the province's airports guide weighs that option against flying from the coast.
Estación Sur bus station, at Méndez Álvaro, is the other destination where the car makes sense. Long-distance coaches to half of Spain and to Portugal leave from there, many of them at night, and those catching them usually carry the luggage of a long trip. From Albacete it is 253 km and about 170 min, and the car drops you at the terminal door, right beside the Cercanías station and metro line 6. It also works the other way round: anyone arriving at Estación Sur before dawn on an international coach and needing to continue to Albacete finds the driver with a name board at the exit.
How do you book both legs, and what about luggage and groups?
The transfer is booked per leg with the pickup address, the destination, the date and the time, and the price is fixed before confirming; each route has its page with the "from" fare and the calculator gives the exact figure. For the return from Madrid it pays to book at the same time, with a precise pickup point: IFEMA's north entrance, the Estación Sur door, the exit of Atocha or Chamartín if you arrive on a train from another city. When the pickup depends on a train or a flight, the number lets the driver follow the arrival and wait at the agreed point with a name board, as the airport and station pickup page explains.
Luggage and passenger numbers are stated when booking so the right car is sent: a saloon comfortably carries three people with one large suitcase each, and for four with trade-fair luggage, a group of friends going to a concert or a family with a pushchair a larger vehicle is assigned. There are no charges per bag or per passenger: the price is per car and per leg. Anyone needing an adapted vehicle will find how to ask for it on the accessibility page. And for anyone travelling to Madrid every week, the fixed service keeps the same pickup scheduled without booking again each time.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Albacete to Madrid by car with a driver?
The published "from" fare to the centre is 304,23 € for the whole car, over 256 km. To IFEMA, from 307,73 €. The calculator gives the exact price with address, date and time.
Does the Albacete AVE arrive at Atocha or Chamartín?
Both, depending on the train: many Levante line services come into Chamartín-Clara Campoamor and others into Puerta de Atocha. The ticket and the Los Llanos board say which; check the terminal before buying if your appointment is at one end of Madrid.
How long is the drive from Albacete to IFEMA?
About 175 min for 259 km along the A-31, A-3 and M-40, without entering the city. The car drops you at the taxi and VTC point at the grounds' north entrance.
Can you pick me up in Madrid after the last AVE or before dawn?
Yes. The transfer is booked for whatever hour is needed, at night too, with an agreed pickup point; if you arrive by train or plane, the number lets us follow any delay and the driver waits with a name board.
Do you also go from Chinchilla or the Llanos villages?
Yes. Pickup is in any town in the province and the way to Madrid joins the A-31 without going through the capital. Each route has its page with the "from" fare.

Train terminals, timetables and operators belong to Renfe, Adif and the other companies and change by season; IFEMA's access arrangements vary with works and each fair. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; the exact price comes from the calculator with date and time.
