Studying at UCLM in Albacete: how to get there from Barajas on day one
Albacete is a good hour and a half from Madrid by high-speed train. From Barajas, the C1 commuter train runs from Terminal 4 to Chamartín, where trains towards the east coast leave with a stop at Albacete-Los Llanos; there are also trains from Atocha. By road it is 265 km, and a pre-booked transfer drops you at the door at a fixed price, which pays off with lots of luggage, in a group or with a late flight. UCLM's general academic year starts on 1 September 2026 and the second semester on 26 January 2027.

Which days do you need to be in Albacete?
UCLM's general undergraduate calendar for 2026-2027 runs from 1 September to 22 January in the first semester and from 26 January to 4 June in the second. The Albacete faculties set their first day within that frame and publish it on their websites, and they do not all match: some spend the first days on induction before classes start. Book your flight with your own faculty's calendar in front of you, not the general one.
September is also the month of the Albacete Fair, from the 7th to the 17th every year, when the city fills with visitors and accommodation becomes pricier and scarcer. If your flat is not sorted yet, arrive with the first nights already booked rather than counting on finding a free room on the day.
How do you get there by train from the airport?
The airport's commuter-train station is underneath Terminal 4; from Terminals 1, 2 and 3 you get there on the free inter-terminal bus. Line C1 reaches Chamartín in a quarter of an hour and continues to Atocha. The high-speed trains to Valencia, Alicante and Murcia that stop at Albacete leave from both stations, so check which one yours leaves from before getting off the commuter train: at Chamartín the change is within the same station.
According to the timetables Renfe published on 2 November 2026, the journey from Madrid to Albacete-Los Llanos takes between an hour and a half and an hour and forty minutes. The last evening train changes between weekdays, weekends and seasons, so check it on renfe.com for your date: with the flight and the commuter train to get through first, an arrival at Barajas late in the afternoon will not make it.
When is a road transfer the better option?
Barajas to Albacete is about 179 min on the A-3 and A-31, and the car from the city of Albacete starts at 321,71 €, with the price fixed before departure and the same amount even if the flight is late. It is a long journey, so it mostly pays off when the car is full: four students arriving the same day, or a family coming along with a whole year's luggage.
It also pays off when the flight lands at night, because it saves a hotel night in Madrid and an early start the next day, and when your destination is not the city itself but another town in the province, which from the station would mean a further bus. The driver waits in arrivals with your name and tracks the flight with the number you put in the booking.
What is getting around Albacete like when you arrive?
Albacete is a flat city with wide streets and short distances, and Albacete-Los Llanos station is within the urban grid, east of the centre. The university campus is also inside the city, so from the station you can get there by city bus, taxi or even on foot if you are not carrying much. Many students live in shared flats around the campus and the centre.
For weekends and trips home, the station has good links with Madrid, Valencia and Alicante. What it does not have is a direct link to the airport: every trip back to Barajas goes through Chamartín or Atocha again, with the same change, or by pre-booked transfer if your flight leaves early.
How do you get back to the airport at the end of the semester?
According to UCLM's general calendar, marks for the first-semester ordinary sitting close on 5 February 2027 and for the second on 10 June; your faculty publishes each exam date. Students going home for Christmas or the summer usually have an early flight, and from Albacete that means taking the train the evening before and sleeping in Madrid, because the first morning train leaves no time to check in for an early international flight.
The alternative is a pre-booked early-morning transfer from your front door to the terminal, with the departure time worked out from the flight. Shared by two or three classmates flying from Barajas the same day, the car splits the cost and saves the hotel night; book it well ahead for the end-of-exam dates, which are the same across the whole university.
Frequently asked questions
Which Madrid station does the train to Albacete leave from?
There are trains from both Chamartín and Puerta de Atocha. From the airport, the C1 commuter train reaches Chamartín first, where the change is within the station.
How long is the train from Madrid to Albacete?
Between an hour and a half and an hour and forty minutes, depending on the train, according to Renfe's timetables published on 2 November 2026.
Does the start of term clash with the Fair?
The Albacete Fair runs from 7 to 17 September and the general term starts on the 1st, so the first weeks overlap. Book your first nights' accommodation in advance.
Can I book the transfer for someone else?
Yes. It is booked in the traveller's name, with their phone and flight; whoever books pays and the driver waits for the person arriving.
