Albacete airport and those of Valencia, Alicante and Murcia: which one suits each town in the province

Albacete airport, south of the city and next to the Los Llanos air base, does not currently have a broad regular schedule: according to Aena, it mainly handles seasonal charter flights and, since March 2026, Imserso holiday flights. When the trip leaves from there, it is the nearest airport for the whole province: from Hellín it is 59 km, about 50 min; from Villarrobledo, 92 km; from Almansa, 73 km. For other flights people still fly from Alicante, Valencia or Murcia. A transfer with a driver, from 76,71 € from La Roda, drops you at the terminal with the price fixed before booking.

Which flights does Albacete airport have today?

Albacete airport shares its runway with the Los Llanos air base, south of the city, which hosts the NATO tactical training programme known as TLP. The civil side, run by Aena, has its own terminal, but for years it has had no stable network of regular flights. Its commercial activity has relied on charter flights: since 2023, according to Aena, package trips have left Albacete for destinations such as Egypt, Morocco, Prague, Budapest, Istanbul or Lapland, nearly always sold by travel agencies as a closed package with flight, hotel and excursions. In March 2026 it handled two flights under the Imserso holiday programme for the first time, one to Palma de Mallorca and another to Tenerife Norte, with the return scheduled for early April.

That model changes how the airport is used. It is not a place you go to find a flight, but one you arrive at with the trip already bought: the agency or the Imserso programme sets the day and time, and the passenger only has to be at the terminal on time. So the first recommendation is to check in the trip documents, or on Aena's website, that the flight really leaves from Albacete and when you need to check in. The second is to plan the trip from home as carefully as you would for a flight from Alicante or Valencia, because a charter concentrates all its passengers in the same time slot and waits for nobody. For nearly everything else, the rest of the province flies from the coastal airports or from Barajas.

How do you reach Albacete airport from the towns of the province?

For anyone living in the city, the airport is close by along the southern road, and many passengers arrive in their own car or are dropped off by a relative. For the towns, it is a different calculation. From Hellín and Tobarra you go up the A-30; from Almansa and Caudete you arrive via the A-31 without entering the city; from Villarrobledo and La Roda you also come down the A-31, from the north, and from La Manchuela, with Casas-Ibáñez, Madrigueras and Tarazona de la Mancha, you arrive along the area's roads. From Casas-Ibáñez to the airport it is 61 km, and from Caudete, 102 km. None of those towns has a bus connecting with the terminal at charter times, so the trip is made by car.

Leaving the car in the airport car park for a week is one option; another is for someone to drop you off and collect you, which means two round trips for that person, one of them at the arrival time of the return flight, often at night. A transfer with a driver solves both halves: the pickup at home at the time the trip requires and the pickup at the terminal on the way back, following the flight's actual arrival. For older people travelling with the Imserso who do not drive, or who prefer not to leave the car parked for several days, it is the way to start and finish the trip at their own front door. From Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón, for example, the trip is short; from Hellín or Villarrobledo it is already a road journey best not made in a rush.

How is a group trip leaving from Albacete airport organised?

Charters and Imserso trips have something in common: many passengers leave from the same town or neighbourhood, in groups, often couples or friends who booked the trip together with the same agency. That allows the transfer to be organised differently. A vehicle seating four travellers and their luggage can collect two couples at their homes and take them together to the terminal; the price is per vehicle, not per person, so the split among the four is usually reasonable. For larger groups, several vehicles can be coordinated to arrive at the same time. When booking it is worth giving the number of suitcases, because on a week-long trip each passenger carries at least one large bag, and whether anyone needs space for a folding wheelchair or a walking frame.

The agency organising the trip usually gives a check-in time at the airport, and it is that time, not the take-off time, that governs the pickup calculation. The calculator suggests the departure time from each home with a margin for the road and getting into the terminal. For a group leaving from several towns, for example Madrigueras and Tarazona de la Mancha, it is best to book one transfer per starting point rather than trying to chain distant pickups, which lengthen the trip for those collected first. The piece on groups and events explains how transport for several people with a driver is organised. And if the group belongs to an association or a senior centre, one person can make the booking on behalf of everyone.

When do Alicante, Valencia or Murcia suit better even if there is a flight from Albacete?

For most trips, the choice still lies with the coastal airports, and the province's rule is to think about where you are leaving from. From Hellín and Tobarra, Región de Murcia airport, at Corvera, is down the A-30, 110 km from Hellín, and has more seasonal flights. From Almansa, Alicante-Elche is 104 km away via the A-31, with the widest range of destinations of the nearby airports. From La Manchuela and La Roda, Valencia-Manises is within reach via the A-3 or via Almansa. And from Villarrobledo, in the north-west, Barajas may be the best option for long-haul flights. Albacete airport pays off when the trip you want leaves from exactly there.

Sometimes the same trip is offered from several airports: a tour of Egypt or a week in the Canary Islands may be sold with departures from Albacete, Alicante or Madrid, with different dates and prices. The comparison should not be made only on the package price, but by adding the journey: reaching Albacete from a town in the province is shorter than reaching the coast, and so is the return, which is usually at night. For someone from Hellín, Murcia and Albacete are at similar distances; for someone from Villarrobledo or La Roda, Albacete is much closer than any coastal airport. That road difference, especially on the way back after a week away, is what often tips the choice towards the departure from home.

What happens on the way back, with night arrivals and delays?

Charter return flights usually arrive at the end of the day or at night, when passengers are tired and the car that dropped them off a week earlier has to come back for them. For that pickup the transfer is booked with the flight number: the driver follows the actual arrival and adjusts the time if the plane is delayed, without anyone having to keep watch from home. They wait at the terminal's arrivals exit, with a name sign if requested. The piece on delayed or cancelled flights explains what happens to the booked transfer if the return is delayed by several hours or moved to another day, which can happen with charters because they depend on a single aircraft flying several rotations in a row.

The trip back from the Albacete terminal to the towns is short compared with what it would take from the coast, but at night and with luggage it is still a drive many prefer not to make. From the terminal to Villarrobledo or Hellín takes what the engine shows, and at that hour the roads are usually clear. If the group travels together, it is worth booking the same vehicle for both directions, with the same stops in reverse order, and leaving the phone number of a contact person. For anyone booking for parents coming back from an Imserso holiday, the booking goes in the traveller's name, with their phone number, and the confirmation and fixed price go to the person paying.

Who else comes to the airport, and how is the transfer booked?

Besides charter passengers, professionals linked to the Los Llanos base and the TLP programme, which brings together aircrews from several countries, and to the aeronautical and logistics businesses that have set up next to the runway also come to the airport area. Many reach the province by AVE at Albacete-Los Llanos station or by air at Alicante, Valencia or Madrid, and are left with the final stretch to the airport area or their hotel. For businesses that receive these visitors, the business account groups the transfers into a monthly invoice, with the booking made in the visitor's name. Visitors from abroad can also read the piece on getting between cities in Spain without a car.

To book a transfer to Albacete airport, you give the pickup address, the airport as the destination and the check-in time given by the agency or the ticket. The calculator suggests the departure time and shows the fixed price before confirming, which is per vehicle and does not change with traffic or time of day. The return is booked at the same time, with the return flight number. If the trip changes date, the booking is changed or cancelled under the conditions explained on the help page. And if the flight you want does not leave from Albacete, the same calculator gives the price to Alicante, Valencia, Murcia or Barajas from the same town, so you can compare with real figures rather than by guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

Does Albacete airport have regular flights?

Today its activity is mainly based on seasonal charter flights and, since 2026, Imserso holiday flights. Before booking the transfer, check in your trip documents or on Aena's website that the flight leaves from Albacete.

How long does it take from Hellín to Albacete airport?

About 50 min without traffic, going up the A-30. The transfer is calculated from the check-in time given by the agency, not the take-off time.

Can two couples be collected in the same car for an Imserso trip?

Yes, if the four travellers and their luggage fit. When booking, give the number of suitcases and both addresses. The price is per vehicle and is fixed before booking.

What happens if the return flight is delayed?

The driver follows the flight's actual arrival using the number you gave when booking and adjusts the pickup. If the return moves to another day, the booking is changed under the conditions on the help page.

From Almansa, is it better to fly from Albacete or Alicante?

If the trip leaves from Albacete, the local airport is closer. For any other flight, Alicante-Elche, via the A-31, has far more destinations. Compare by adding the journey, not just the ticket price.
