Hellín and Tobarra, in the south of the province, are a land of esparto grass, irrigated farmland and a drum-filled Holy Week. Hellín has a hospital and is the gateway to the Sierra del Segura, and because it sits on the A-30 many trips head as much towards Albacete as towards Murcia.

Which way it goes

Albacete province has its capital in the middle and its other towns on the edges: Villarrobledo to the north-west, Almansa to the east, Hellín to the south. The A-31 and A-30 motorways link the capital well with Almansa and Hellín, but buses between towns are scarce, and the southern mountains are crossed on slow mountain roads.

Albacete-Los Llanos station is on the high-speed line from Madrid to the east coast, with trains to Madrid and Alicante, as well as conventional services. It is the station for the whole province, so early in the day travellers arrive from Hellín, Almansa or La Roda with no bus connection at that hour.

On arrival: Llanos de Albacete

The capital and its immediate surroundings, with Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón and its castle close by, hold a large share of the province's population. The General Hospital, Albacete-Los Llanos station, the airport and the fairground are all here, so Albacete is both the starting point and the destination of most trips.

When demand peaks

• Albacete Fair (7 to 17 September): The Fair, of international tourist interest, fills the city for ten days in a row with people from across the province and beyond. Traffic around the fairground is closed off and returns to the villages bunch up in the early hours.

Tip: If you book during the September Fair, give an address away from the fairground area or ask about the pickup point: the surrounding streets are closed off.
